We like to head down to Key West - all the way - in April, as the weather is perfect. Coincidentally we seem to always pick the same weekend they hold the 'Drag Race' which is a hoot!
Driving time is about three hours from Miami. It is mostly a two lane highway the whole way. Some congestion areas have improved due to new bridges. Kick back, turn on Jimmy Buffet and enjoy the scenery.
You can always over night in Islamorada. The Cheeca Lodge is a highly recommended resort. Pierre’s Lounge and Restaurant one half hour before sunset on the second floor deck is supposed to be wonderful. Also Chef Michael's Restaurant is another good choice.
There are flights from Ft. Lauderdale and Miami if you want to fly.
One of our favorite hotels to stay while visiting Key West is La Te Da. It is located towards the Southern Point on Duval Street. They can easily accommodate large parties if given enough notice. There is a great outside bar and an inside bar with a piano player in the evenings. The restaurant is great and breakfast is included with your stay. Be sure to take in a show at the the Crystal Room, home of The Cabaret at La Te Da.

Another option is Simonton Court Historic Inn and Cottages. They have several different room sizes available and some are situated offering private pools. This hotel is closer to activity, but a few blocks off Duval so you don't get the noise.
We haven't stayed at any of these hotels, but the following have been recommended by friends: Heron House, Cypress House, Curry Mansion, and the Gardens Hotel.
Try Two Friends for breakfast or lunch. It is near Mallory Square area and Conch Train. Also, Sarabeth's or Harpoon Harry's.
For a wonderful Italian dinner, try LA Trattoria Restaurant. We have never had a bad meal and eat here every visit. They have an excellent secluded martini bar in the back. Try it out!
We haven't made it to these restaurants, but they come highly recommended by friends: Café Marquesa on Fleming Street or AZUR Restaurant.
For dessert, try Better Than Sex Dessert Restaurant. Too good to pass up!
The evening doesn't stop here. Now it's time for the Duval Crawl: walk up to Fat Tuesdays for a frozen cocktail, then Irish Kevin's, then the famous or infamous Sloppy Joes, cross over to Rick's Bar for a little dancing and if you are brave enough, finish up at the Garden of Eden on the rooftop of the Bull and Whistle.
While in Key West, be sure to visit the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory or take a day trip to the Fort Jefferson Monument. You can also go fishing, scuba diving or snorkeling. Just be prepared to RELAX and have a great time!
